GI Index

I wondered if anyone else has used the GI index of foods to work out if they are good for blood sugar? Most things are obvious to me but it does surprise me that white spagetti has low GI when wholemeal spagetti fills me up so much. Also parsnips are worse GI than mashed potato, that was also a surprise. I wonder if it has been a good guide for anyone else with low blood sugar?

Hi,

Yes I use a GI index card and it helps remind me the range to stay within. I eat pasta in small (1 Cup)amounts but I was told only to eat 100% Semolina pasta. White bleached flour tends to be worse for Hypos. 100% Semolina is wheat flour not bleached, has a yellowish color. The GI Index card helps but you have to know the way certain carbs are processed. Like pasta and rice noodles.

I just checked out a book called "Sugar Shock!" author Connie Bennett, which is excellent and very helpful, but she has a whole chapter devoted to GI index and how it's not very helpful b/c of this problem....some healthy foods have high GI while some bad have low. She explains why that is and how it can be innacurate. Might be helpful for you:)
